Se mantuvo silencioso por un momento, como un hombre que reflexiona, y ella observó su cara severa y bella, revelada con claridad por la luz que la golpeaba desde las ventanas de la casa. Él no la miró a los ojos. En cambio, los suyos buscaron el mar, que relucía bajo las estrellas brillantes y reflejaba las luces parpadeantes de las naves en la rada, miraron las luciérnagas que revoloteaban por los arbustos a la caza de polillas, miraban a cualquier parte salvo hacia la pequeña figura a su lado.
